BOOKS
"Dream Homes of Metro New York" (Panache, $39.95): Don't be fooled by the spectacular cover photo on this book, which has special sections for Long Island and the Hamptons. Among the works of 50 participating architects, the Great Neck house with forceful, jutting forms designed by Stuart Narofsky is one of only a handful of contemporary customized residences featured in this impeccably photographed, 208-page tome. Die-hard traditionalists - including those Long Islanders who favor this current trend in architecture - will not be disappointed: There are enough Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, shingle-style and Tudor mansions with stately columns, round-top and latticed windows and turrets to fill a Dickensian scrapbook. But here and there among these grand structures of the past, courageous architects, with the blessings of willing clients, make gestures, like grins from mischievous children, that lift the houses from their staid demeanor.
